Les Arlots

I have several passions in my life, including potatoes. Who says potato says purée, thee who says purée says Les Arlots. Because sacred best Sausage-purée of Paris by Le Fooding in 2017.

So I came to Les Argots after having booked a table for lunch (which is inevitable since the venue is quite small and really full). Unfortunately, no sausage-purée on that day. Instead of that : four starters, two mains, two desserts :

Deviled eggs with herring, or green asparagus, peas and mint soup, od veal head carpaccio sauce gribiche, or country terrine;

Fish soup, or veal axoa and rice;

Madagascar vanilla flan, or cream and Cléry strawberries.

Since we like to mutualise, my friends goes for the eggs as a starter and fish soup as a dish, and I go for asparagus soup for starter and axoa as a dish. Don’t really have a choice here, I hate fish soup.

There’s also a numerous choice of wine and beers but due to my hangover I choose water.

Starters

My asparagus soup shows up to be incredibly green, fresh and sleek. In just the right amount, just what I needed to open my appetite. Topped with a crunchy handful of line seeds, it’s a delight.

Yseult a pris les oeufs au hareng, et je lui dis « file-moi ton hareng » parce qu’à priori elle n’aime pas trop ça, et moi j’adore. Sauf que, subtilité : le hareng n’est pas entier, il aromatise la mayonnaise.

Yseult went for the herring and eggs, I tell her ‘give me you herring’ because she said she didn’t like it and I do. But, subtlety : it’s not properly speaking herring, it’s a mayonnaise herring. So it’s basically three half boiled eggs, topped with herring mayonnaise, topped with salmon roe, around a handful of salad, coming in her plate. And that too, a real delight. The small fish eggs burst into my mouth and are caught up by the creamy mayonnaise and the perfectly boiled eggs. I’m even beginning to regret that’s not what I ordered !

Mains

Then come the mains. My axoa comes in two times : one plate with meat (saucy and stuff), and a little rice casserole aside.

Fish soup comes in three times : an empty soup bowl, a small plate with the croutons, the rouille and cheese, and finally a teapot filled with soup, that waiter pours straight into her bowl.

My axoa is really good. Very rich, very tasteful (it tastes like tomatoes, peppers, tastes that remind me of the chili con carne but without corn and black beans), and most of all this big spoon of cream  right in the middle of the plate. Refreshes the plate, never carried its name better.

We are to full to have desserts, but people next to us did and it looked really good…

In the end

Les Arlots is a really good spot. Small, but really cool. It has these small neighborhood restaurant vibes, waiters are really nice, it’s all simple but great. As it the cooking : somewhere halfway between simple and elaborated, like a grandmother’s cooking but more refined. And quite affordable too : 19€ lunch menu, with starter+main or main+dessert, and 23€ for starter+main+dessert.

Next thing to do now : go back, and try this legendary sausage-purée !
